Sebastian Baumgartner is a German drummer, percussionist and composer. Born in Passau, Germany he is currently living in Austria. After studying classical percussion at the Berufsfachschule für Musik Plattling, he studied jazz drumset and instrumental pedagogy at Kunstuniversität Graz.
Sebastian studied with John Riley, Ari Hoenig, Gregory Hutchinson, Chris Smith, Howard Curtis and Christian Lillinger, among others.He is considered as one of the most promising young drummers in the field of hard/post bop as well as free jazz and contemporary music, and has worked with Kirk Lightsey, Jim Rotondi, Mike Rodriguez, Duane Eubanks, Luis Bonilla, Dena DeRose, Dan Barrett, Marco Churnchetz, John Beasly, Alex Goodman, Roman Schwaller, the JM Jazz World Orchestra and the Studio Percussion Ensemble Graz.Concerts and tours have taken him to Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Italy, Hungary, Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia and Japan; he has played at renowned festivals such as the
Jazz is Back - Boško Petrović Festival, the Inntöne Jazzfest or the European Weeks for Contemporary Music.Sebastian is a multiple national prize winner at the German chamber music competition "Jugend Musiziert" and a scholarship award winner of the Hildegard Schmalzl Music Foundation Regensburg.

Soothsayer

Sebastian is co-leading the trio Soothsayer:
They explore the sound possibilities of the classic saxophone-contrabass-drums line-up in a new way. Their sound and playing style can be described as raw, energetic and risk-taking; musical influences range from hard/post bop to free jazz. The original inspiration for the group's repertoire was recordings by the Elvin Jones Trio, but today it consists largely of original compositions by the band members, supplemented by occasional arrangements of jazz standards. The band has performed several times in Austria and toured Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia; they released their debut album "Paleontology" on Klopotec Records in June 2024.Soothsayer are:

Sebastian Baumgartner Modern Jazz

Happening every month (usually on the last Thursday), Sebastian's concert series "Modern Jazz" is taking place in Passau's renowned jazz club Café Museum. Featuring some of the best jazz musicians around, it is a tribute to all playing styles of jazz from the 1940s on and showcases players and composers of all generations....next up: April 23rd w/ Kejdi Barbullushi
